If you’re a tradie who uses a trailer to store your tools or specialised equipment, it’s a good idea to have Trailer Insurance.

While it isn’t legally required to be covered, you could be risking a lot by leaving yourself uninsured. There’s a fair bit of risk in a tradesperson’s line of work and if you rely on your trailer and its contents for your trade, you’ll be left vulnerable.

What Is It?

Put simply, trailer insurance will provide financial cover should something happen involving your trailer.

The cost to get insured very much depends on the value of your trailer and the insurer you choose. It’s always best to have a chat to a trades insurance expert before you purchase so you know you’ve got all your bases covered.

What Can Go Wrong?

Even if your vehicle and tools are insured, your trailer may not be included, especially if you frequently leave it unhooked. This means you can be left exposed to a range of costs if something happens to it.

Trailer insurance can get you covered in the event of:

Storms, hail or lightening

Theft or vandalism

Fire

Legal liability

Third-party property

Accidents and Collisions

There are a range of things that can go wrong involving your trailer and if you don’t have insurance, you’ll have to wear the consequences.

What Can I Claim?

In the event that something does happen, you’ll be able to claim the costs associated with:

Damage and replacement

Towing

Storage

Any required clean-up

Make sure you talk to your insurer to know exactly what your trailer insurance covers, how comprehensive it is and what claims you can make. A good insurer will tailor your insurance to suit your needs… which is why you should choose Tradesure!

Tradesure, one of Australia’s leading insurers for Tradesman, experienced a record number of inquiries on Wednesday the 18th February, this week.

Kris Minns from Tradesure said, “We were flat out all day, our phones started ringing at 8am and didn’t stop till well after 5pm and our online quotes kept streaming in.”

Ross Forbes, Director of Tradesure says, “There could be a few reasons why this was a record day, but in general we believe that it is because Tradies are seeing the value of being prepared with their insurance.’

It appears Tradies are learning the value of insurance and aren’t leaving things to chance. Ross Forbes, Director of Tradesure, says, “We are pleased to see that the word is getting around about the value of insurance for Tradies.”

There is the obvious advantage in protecting things such as your tools from theft and your income from illness and injury, but Tradies should also consider the advantages of making sure their public liability is current.

Ross Forbes says, “Tradesman should consider that it’s not just about protecting your own build and tools but about having the right insurance in place to take advantage of the increased demand for Tradies to help rebuild devastated areas, such as those from cyclone Marica in Queensland.”

Ross explains, “I have been insuring Tradies all around Australia for over 30 years and have witnessed the positive and negative effects that natural disasters can have on the Industry. While the rain and winds might have an impact on their current work, after the lull, they will certainly need to be prepared for the increased demand for work in the cyclone affected areas.”

Ross advises, “Those Tradies that have their insurance sorted will be able to hit the ground running when it comes to assisting with the rebuilding efforts.”

Some Tradesman will move onto other industries or work out on the mines to supplement their income during hard times, and then when the demand for work picks up, they want to jump back on the tools. Tradesure are one of the few advisers that have a ‘re-start service’ that allows Tradies in this type of situation to re-start their policy with a simple phone call instead of going through the whole quoting process again.

The cost of insurance is becoming less and less of a barrier for Tradies who want to be ready for natural disasters. “It appears many Tradesman and builders are a lot more aware that the cost of insurance, for some policies, is a lot lower than it has been in the past.”

Ross says, “Take tools insurance for example, it is now more affordable today than it was 7 years ago.”

Tradies and Builders need to be prepared and aware of how insurance can impact on their business during a natural disaster.

Why do I need Tool insurance? Tradesman rely heavily on their tools to produce income for them so they are a very important part of their business. They can also be expensive to replace particularly for those tradies who have tools worth over $10,000 and some of the claims we have experience have results in a tradie losing all his tools because their utility or trailer has been stolen.

Some circumstances are beyond our control – a fire, an unfortunate motor vehicle accident and someone breaking into you vehicle and steeling tools are all incidences which have occurred and will occur to a tradie again and insurance offers the only real financial solution to having a tradie back where they were before the loss and once again able to earn income.

Who can take out Tools Insurance

Anyone associated with the building trade including apprentices, garden maintenance contractors, handyman services, mechanics, floor sanders and basically anyone who has tools that they use to earn a living. Tool insurance is the solution.

What does my insurance cover against?

Various insurers offer different covers. What you need to be aware of is the scope of the cover. Some questions tradies need to address to understand their insurance are;

Does the insurance cover my tools in the back of my vehicle when its not locked or they are not in a locked secured tool box?

Are they covered if they get stolen on a work site?

What excess applies to a claim?

Is there a limit any one item?

Are they insured if damaged in an accident?

If I claim do I get the new tools or just the value of the old ones?

Does the cover include stock?

How long does it take to be paid on a claim?

Unfortunately not all insurers offer the same cover and it is important that Tradies understand their particular cover so they can take action to avoid losses where they may not be insured.

It can vary from insurer to insurer and you would need to ask each insurer individually what their cover is to be clear.

What our Cover is for

At Tradesure our cover is as for; Fire, flood, lightning, explosion, malicious damage or vandalism, theft following forcible and violent entry which causes visible damage to a locked vehicle or premises, theft of equipment which is securely attached to a vehicle through use of locks or padlocks, which result in visible damage to the securing devices, collision or overturning of the conveying vehicle.

Limit $2,000 per item unless specified

Excess $250 per claim

By restricting the cover to these occurrences Tradesure has been able to reduce the insurance premium substantially which is much more affordable to tradies as the premium dropped from as high as $80.00 per $1,000 per year at some insurers to just over $30.00 at $1,000 per year at Tradesure. The premium is of course tax deductible

Tradesure also have a claim guarantees in that if all the paper work is in order that you claim will be settled within 5 working days of being submitting. To assist with claims and something that will also assist your accountant with your tax we strongly recommend you keep an up to date register of all your tools which should include a description of the tool, its purchase price and the date purchased
